È davvero 304? Una guida pratica per riconoscere l'acciaio inossidabile falso

IL $10,000 Mistake
Imagine this: You’ve just finished a luxury waterfront resort. The railings gleam, the wall cladding is perfect. Six months later, orange spots start appearing on the handrails. The client is furious. The contractor is blaming the material. You test it, and the result is devastating: it’s not 304 acciaio inossidabile. It’s 201.
This scenario happens far too often. The visual difference between Grade 304 and Grade 201 is almost non-existent to the untrained eye. Both can be polished to a mirror finish. Both can be PVD coated. But chemically, they are worlds apart.
As a manufacturer that ships globally, we see the aftermath of this fraud regularly. Our goal isn’t just to sell you steel; it’s to ensure your reputation stays intact. Here is everything you need to know to protect your projects from inferior materials.
The Chemistry: Why Nickel Matters
Let’s keep it simple. Stainless steel resists rust because of a protective layer formed by Chromium and Nickel.
  • Grado 304: Contains roughly 18% Chromium and 8% Nickel. This high nickel content makes it tough, ductile, and highly resistant to rust, even in salty or humid environments. It’s the global standard for architecture.
  • Grado 201: To cut costs, manufacturers replace most of the expensive nickel with Manganese and Nitrogen. It usually has less than 5% nickel. It’s harder and more brittle, but critically, it lacks corrosion resistance. In a dry indoor office? Maybe it survives. Near the ocean, in a kitchen, or outdoors? It will rust.
The price difference is significant. If a supplier quotes you a price that seemstoo good to be truefor 304, they are likely selling you 201 and keeping the profit margin.
4 Ways to Test It (From Simple to Scientific)
You don’t need a PhD in metallurgy to check your goods. Here are four methods we recommend to our clients:
1. The Spark Test (Quick & Dirty)
Take a piece of angle grinder to the steel.
  • 304: The sparks are short, reddish-orange, and don’t burst much. The flow is steady.
  • 201: Because of the manganese, the sparks fly long, bright yellow/white, and burst into many branches like a firework.
  • Note: This damages the surface, so only do it on a sample or a hidden area.
2. The Magnetic Check (A Common Myth)
Many people thinkStainless steel shouldn’t be magnetic. That’s false. Both 304 E 201 can be slightly magnetic, especially after cold working (like bending or polishing). Tuttavia, 201 is generally more magnetic than 304. While not definitive, if a magnet sticks aggressively to a sheet claimed to be annealed 304, be suspicious.
3. The Chemical Reagent Test (The Field Standard)
You can buyStainless Steel Identification Liquidonline for a few dollars.
  • Drop the liquid on a clean spot.
  • 304: The liquid stays clear or turns very light gray slowly.
  • 201: Within seconds, the liquid turns dark gray or black. The manganese reacts instantly.
This is the fastest way to check goods upon arrival at the port before signing the delivery note.
4. The Salt Spray Test (The Gold Standard)
For large orders, never skip this. Send a sample to a lab like SGS or Bureau Veritas. They put the steel in a foggy salt chamber.
  • Bene 304 should last 100+ hours without red rust.
  • 201 will often show rust in under 48 ore.
If your supplier refuses to provide a recent Salt Spray Report for their PVD products, do not proceed.
Our Promise: Zero Tolerance for Fraud
We know trust is hard to earn. That’s why our process is built on verification, not promises.
  • Raw Material Control: We only buy coils from top-tier mills with full traceability.
  • Spectrometer Testing: Every coil is tested in our lab upon arrival to verify the exact chemical composition.
  • Contractual Guarantee: Our contracts explicitly state the grade. If third-party testing at your port proves the nickel content is below 304 standards, we cover the cost of the test, the return freight, and the replacement.
Don’t gamble your project on a cheap price tag. The cost of replacing rusted cladding is ten times the savings you made on the material. Choose transparency. Choose verified quality. If you have doubts about your current supply, send us a sample. We’ll test it for free and tell you exactly what it is.
